American Idol Season 9: Top 11


This week, the 11 Idol finalists sing their hearts out. A spot in the top 10 and the summer concert tour rests on this week's performances.

Lee Dewyze-sang "The Letter" by the Box Tops; knocked it out of the park; raised the bar for himself; comfortable on stage; Simon hated it; Lee's in the top 10-hopefully, Lee will have a moment on stage next week
Paige Miles-sang "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins; terrible; pitchy; Ellen likes her look; ignored the judges' advice of picking the right song; worst vocal performance of the season; Paige's chances of staying in the competition are slim and none
Tim Urban- sang "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen; boring vocals; karaoke; pointless & silly; zero chance of winning the competition; I 100% agree with Simon; Tim must go home this week!!
Aaron Kelly-sang "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" by Aerosmith; has a crush on Miley Cyrus; pitchy; came down with laryngitis; Randy's a fan; best song choice of the night--according to Ellen; needs to work on his stage presence more; Simon called it "old-fashioned"; Aaron's safe for another week
Crystal Bowersox-sang "Me and Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin; slayed it; needs to connect with the audience more; has big plans for next week; as good as Pink's version of the song; Crystal's in the top 10!!
Michael Lynche-sang "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge; knows who he is; safe song choice; loungy; over indulgent; got tons of chrisma; Big Mike's back next week!!
Andrew Garcia-sang "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye; ditched the guitar; Randy hated it; bad song choice; sucked the soul out of the song; Andrew-Bottom 3
Katie Stevens-sang "Big Girls Don't Cry" by Fergie; picked a younger song; listened to the judges; described as the "Dakota Fanning of American Idol"; good performance; Katie's safe!!
Casey James-sang "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News; played the electric guitar; not a great song choice; copycat; no originality; Casey's safe!!
Didi Benami-sang "You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt; out of tune; wrong song choice; Ellen didn't like it; Kara was confused; Simon was not happy: Didi may be in trouble
Siobhan Magnus-sang "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder; fearless; comfortable on stage; Simon hated the whole show but warned the other contestants to start picking better songs because Crystal is moving one step closer to the finish line; Siobhan's safe!!

American Idol Season 9: Top 12


Idol has reached the finals. Now, the competition raises the stakes and the 12 finalists have fought their way through the semifinalists. They better be on their "A" game because one bad performance could end the Idol dream for someone. Which one of the 12 finalists is this year's American Idol? Who has a chance to be the "dark horse" ? America, you got to vote for the right person to win the competition so think very carefully before picking up the phone.
This week's theme: songs of the second greatest rock band in the world--The Rolling Stones
Michael Lynche-sang "Miss You"; Randy wasn't crazy about the arrangement; a good start to the show; delivered on stage; Simon hated his dancing; Big Mike's Safe!!
Didi Benami-sang "Playing with Fire"; Randy loved it; great; intense; compelling; two steps forward; good song choice; solid performance; Didi's safe for another week
Casey James-sang "It's All Over Now"; played his electric guitar; bluesy; fantastic; was a rock star; one of the earliest Stones songs; Simon liked the performance but wanted Casey to move around the stage more; Casey's safe!
Lacey Brown-sang "Ruby Tuesday"; pleasantly surprised; sleepy; 50/50 for Kara; needs to let loose on the stage; Simon liked the vocals; Lacey may be around next week!
Andrew Garcia-sang "Gimme Shelter"; pitchy; best performance yet-according to Ellen; Kara didn't feel it; wanted more intensity on stage; Simon hoped that Andrew survives another week despite his disappointment
Katie Stevens-sang "Wild Horses"; very strong performance; good song choice; better than last week; gave it 100% effort; Katie stays!!
Tim Urban-sang "Under My Thumb"; played the guitar and did a reggae version; Randy didn't get it; weird version; beach type performance; Ellen disliked it; boring; didn't work; Tim's going home this week!
Siobhan Magnus-sang "Paint It Black"; Siobhan rocked it; most interesting version; standout performance of the night; Siobhan could be the "dark horse" this year--Safe!
Lee Dewyze-sang "Beast of Burden"; played the guitar; interesting version; less than expected; showed more confidence; lack of personality; too safe; Simon wants Lee to have a moment next week
Paige Miles-sang "Honky Tonk Woman"; Randy liked it; good stage presence despite laryngitis; needs to have a performance that could make her a standout; Paige is safe
Aaron Kelly-sang "Angie"; born to sing; great song choice; connected with the song; believable; Aaron stays for another week
Crystal Bowersox-sang "You Can't Always Get What You Want"; played the guitar; sang with ease; comfortable on stage; wasn't her best performance; beaten by Siobhan; Crystal's back next week!

Siobhan Magnus-sang "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals; Last week got rave reviews from the judges; Ellen was captivated; made it current; brilliant song choice; Simon wasn't a fan and he was underimpressed; Siobhan will be in the final 12

Paige Miles-sang "Smile" written by Charlie Chaplin--famous for his little tramp character in silent movies; didn't work; wrong song choice; too big for her voice; awful arrangement; Simon is very disappointed; Paige's dream of the top 12 could be shattered
Crystal Bowersox-sang Tracy Chapman's "Give You What You Need"; played the electric guitar; Randy's a fan; she knows who she is; she is the girl to beat in the competition; Crystal's heading to the top 12
Lilly Scott-sang Patsy Cline's "I Fall to Pieces"; played the mandolin; good job; Ellen loved it; made Patsy Cline feel contemporary; brave song choice; Lilly's spot in the top 12 is secured

Tim Urban-sang Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah"; acoustic guitar version; good job; may be in it to win it; showed emotion; smart song choice; strongest performance so far in the competition; Tim's spot in the top 12 is secured
Andrew Garcia-sang Christina Aguliera's "Genie in a Bottle"; played the guitar; interesting but unsual song choice; Randy hated it; off key; may have peaked at the wrong time; Kara was disappointed; Simon was disappointed for the third week in a row; Simon's patience with Andrew may have ran out
Casey James-sang "You'll Think of Me" by Keith Urban; safe song choice; lack of sparks; sincere; sounded great; Casey could be in the top 12 and wow the cougars all over America
Aaron Kelly-sang "I'm Already There" by Lonestar; has confidence of a 30 year old; didn't impress Ellen; song too big-sang it in a third person; irrelevant; Simon disagreed with Kara; had emotion; Aaron has a chance of making the top 12
Todrick Hall-sang Queen's "Somebody to Love"; gospel type version; brave song choice; Simon described Todrick as a singer who performs on Broadway instead of on the top of the charts; Todrick is going home this week!
Michael Lynche-sang Maxwell's "Woman's Work"; Randy was surprised and shocked by the last note; Beautiful; Kara was brought to tears; saved the show; he 100% nailed it!!; Big Mike's in the top 12

American Idol Season 9: Semifinals Week 2


This week, it's the top 20-10 girls and 10 guys. The performances have to be better than last week. The contestants must choose better songs--uptempo at least. In a surprising change, the guys took the stage and the girls performed the next night.

Top 10 Guys
Michael Lynche-was a theater geek in high school and an athlete; sang James Brown's "This Is A Man's World"; got a standing ovation from Randy; unbelievable; the one to beat; owned the stage; changed from a "pussycat to a lion"; old soul; good song choice; best performance in the competition so far; Big Mike's Safe!!
John Park-his second language is English because he lived in Korea when he was 6 years old; sang "Gravity" by John Mayer; no originality; pitchy; better song choice; lacked connection; lack of believability; didn't take enough risks; John's going home!
Casey James-never had a TV his whole life--what cool TV shows did Casey miss growing up?; sang "I Don't Wanna Be" by Gavin DeGraw; played the electric guitar; he channeled Jimi Hendrix; hot; needs to move around the stage more; went two steps backwards; rock star wannabe; The cougars will get more of Casey next week
Alex Lambert-created a language in the 6th grade; sang "Everybody Knows" by John Legend; played his guitar; improvement over last week; gaining confidence; incredible recording voice; one million percent better than last week; Alex stays in the competition for another week
Todrick Hall-performed in "The Nutcracker" as a kid; sang "What's Love Got to Do with It" by Tina Turner; Randy hated it; not the right song choice; forgettable; performance can be found in any theme park in America; Todrick's on the bubble!!
Jermaine Sellers-wears a "onesie"-some kind of pajama wear; sang "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye; better than last week but picked the wrong song; off key; tried too hard; judges were getting impatient and frustrated; old fashioned; Jermaine tried to get Simon to go to church with him; Jermaine's Idol journey comes to an end; that song is untouchable
Andrew Garcia-his hidden talent is breakdancing; sang John Morrison's "You Give Me Something"; ditched the guitar; pitchy; Ellen liked it; played it too safe; wrong song choice; Simon is disappointed for the second week in a row; Andrew has to get better next week or else, he will not make the top 12
Aaron Kelly-loves photography; sang "My Girl" by the Temptations; 200% better than last week; gained more confidence; Kara liked it but Simon did not; Aaron needs to sing a song that is suitable for his age--16 years old; Aaron has got to get it right next week to make the Top 12
Tim Urban-comes from a large family with 4 brothers and 5 sisters; sang "Come On Get Higher"-Matt Nathanson; played his guitar; karaoke; out of tune; he should try acting; no originality; Simon thought Tim improved better than last week; current; Tim returns next week
Lee DeWyze-got in trouble during his high school years; sang Hinder's "Lips of an Angel"; bold; Randy loved it despite pitch problems; big improvement from last week; could have his first hit single played on the radio; head and shoulders above the other guys in the competition; Lee stays

Crystal Bowersox-has a twin brother; was in the hospital the other day but recovered in time to perform "As Long I Can See the Light" by Creedence Clearwater Revival; played her guitar; gospel feel; true to herself; pure, raw, natural talent; focused; hit a new level; great song choice; incredible vocal performance; Crystal's in good health and staying in the competition; Stay healthy, Crystal because we want to see more of you in the finals and maybe become our next American Idol
Haeley Vaughn-likes to make hair accessories and headbands; sang "The Climb"-Miley Cyrus; Randy didn't like it; pitchy; disconnected from the song; has an Alex Lambert-type factor; inconsistent; needs to work on her vocals; wrong song choice; Haeley's climb to the top may reach a dead end
Lacey Brown-loves to shop for antique furniture; sang "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer; karaoke; adorable; Ellen liked it; needs to step up her game to be the possible front runner in the competition; marginally better than last week; could be forgettable; Lacey may return next week
Katie Stevens-can say "Give Me A Kiss" in 6 different languages; sang "Put Your Records On"-Corinne Bailey Rae; needs to believe that she can tackle bigger songs; needs to sing young, hip songs; Kara was frustrated; Simon thinks Katie needs to convince the judges and America that she wants to be a young recording artist; Katie's safe!
Didi Benami-was a mascot in middle school; sang "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers; not a good song choice; terrible; lack of consistency; karaoke; screechy; Didi's going home this week
Michelle Delamor-directs a children's choir at her church; sang "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed; Randy was disappointed; pitch problems; Ellen, Kara and Simon liked it; Kara's favorite performance; took a risk; Michelle's safe for another week!!
Lilly Scott-in addition to the guitar, she plays several other musical instruments; sang Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come"; played her guitar; tough song to sing; Randy's favorite performance of the night; she got the "it" factor; had her first moment in the competition this season; unbelievable; Lilly could change the game-she moves on to the next round
Katelyn Epperly-was studying to be a recording engineer; sang Coldplay's "The Scientist" and played the piano; way too slow; great until the last few sour notes; needs to figure out who she is; smart song choice; a million percent better than last week; Katelyn's back for another next week
Paige Miles-likes to color pictures with crayons and markers; sang Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away" which was written by Kara DioGuardi; Randy wants to sing the big notes; Ellen loved it; great energy; had fun; failed to pick the right song for two straight weeks; Paige gets one more chance to get it right next week
Siobhan Magnus-once sported a mohawk; sang Aretha Franklin's "Think"; bold; fearless; belted that big note well; interesting to watch; Siobhan's journey continues next week
