American Idol Season 9: Semifinals Week 1-Top 24

The auditions are over and the Hollywood round has ended and the judges have chosen their 24 semifinalists. Now, America gets to decide who moves on and who goes home. The next three weeks, the girls perform on one night, and the guys on the next night. The 2 least voted girls and 2 least voted guys are eliminated. The pressure is up a notch. It's time to bring it or else go home.

Theme: Hits from the Billboard Charts

Choosing the right song is very important, along with confidence, stage presence, and charisma. All those elements will garner enough votes from the viewers to stay in the competition.

Top 12 Girls

Paige Miles-"It's All Right Now"-Free-Simon thinks that she has the best voice out of all the girls; not a good song choice; soul; great job; good stage presence; Paige is safe!

Ashley Rodriguez-"Happy"-Leona Lewis; Big song to sing; Kara asked her to pick songs that will make her standout; predictable; safe; clumsy; going backwards; no originality; On the bubble

Janell Wheeler-"What About Love"-Heart; bad song choice; Randy still likes her; pitchy; Ellen likes her; off key; she may be back next week

Lilly Scott-"Fixing A Hole"-The Beatles; I am unfamiliar with that song; played her guitar; random song choice; standout; lack of star power; best performance of the night so far; sang from the heart; believable; real indie artist; honest; Lilly moves on to the next round

Katelyn Epperly-"Oh Darling"-The Beatles; Very unfamiliar with that song; Simon likes her quirkiness; brave song choice; knows what she is doing; Kara hates her look; she could go places; Caught Ellen's attention; Katelyn stays; needs to work on her image

Haeley Vaughn-"I Wanna Hold Your Hand"-The Beatles; had fun, energetic; technical abilities need improvement; shined on stage; complete and utter mess; Haeley could stay for another week

Lacey Brown-"Landslide"-Fleetwood Mac; not the right song for Lacey's voice; terrible; boring; out of tune; Lacey's going home this week!

Michelle Delamor-"Falling"-Alicia Keys; fantastic; capable of better; done enough to move on to next week; lack of believability; tough song; need to take more risks

Didi Benami-"The Way I Am"-Ingrid Michaelsen; dreary; lack of sparks; lack of star quality; low key first impression; Didi's going home

Siobhan Mangus-"Wicked Game"-Chris Isaak; Kara liked her performance; in the zone; marginal song choice; mysterious; dark; Siobhan's back next week

Crystal Bowersox-"Hand in My Pocket"-Alanis Morrisette; One of Randy's favorites; refreshing; copycat; Crystal's back next week

AWARDS SHOW WATCH 2010: THE GRAMMY AWARDS

What up, music fans? You have been waiting for it all year. It's time to honor the best music of this past year and watch performances from your favorite artists and bands. It's the 52nd annual Grammy Awards from the Staples Center in Los Angeles!
First, I will mention the winners then I will critique the performances.
The Winners:
Song of the Year: "Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It)"-Beyonce
Best Country Album-"Fearless"-Taylor Swift
Best New Artist-Zac Brown Band
Best Rap Song Collaboration-"Run This Town"-Jay Z, Rihanna & Kanye West
Best Female Vocal Performance-"Halo"-Beyonce
Album of the Year-"Fearless"-Taylor Swift
Best Comedy Album-Stephen Colbert "A Colbert Christmas"
Record of the Year-"Use Somebody"-Kings of Leon
Best Rock Album-"21st Century Breakdown"-Green Day
If you want to see a complete list of the winners, go to http://www.grammys.com/
Performances:
Opening Number--Duet with Sir Elton John & Lady Gaga
What a way to open the show, Lady Gaga was on the top of her game. She rocked in an out of this world space outfit. When she came out with Elton on the piano, the number won the crowd over. Good performance, great entertainment. A performance that everybody is talking about today. Her outfits were outrageous.
Stephen Colbert's monologue
He was funny. He mocked Susan Boyle--well, at least he could have mocked Adam Lambert. He wanted to prove to his teenage daughter who was in the audience that he is cool. She was happy that her dad won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album. He even plugged Apple's newest product the I-PAD. I don't get it. I don't even own an I-PHONE, an I-POD, and an I-MAC.
Green Day and the Broadway cast of "American Idiot"
Good performance and why would the rock band Green Day want to produce a show on Broadway. The crowd was impressed.
Beyonce-"If I Were A Boy"
What's up with the space outfits? Beyonce blew us away with her performance. Why would she write a song titled "If I Were A Boy"? If a guy sang "If I Were A Girl", it would be strange. Weird title for a song but overall good performance. Great dancing from the backup dancers and the backup band is all female....they sounded good.
Pink
Her performance was like something out of Cirque Du Soleil. She did a high wire performance that was awesome. Did Pink perform in a circus before she became a recording artist? We hope that Pink will include the high wire in her future concerts
Black Eyed Peas
They performed two songs " I Am A Be" & their hit rocking party anthem "I've Gotta Feeling"--can't enough of that song. The backup dancers dressed as robots. Again, why are we bombarded with what everybody will be wearing in the year 2050? They stopped the show. For real. Fergie was her usual bad girl self.
Leon Russell & Zac Brown Band
The performance was alright. Leon Russell looked like one of the guys from ZZ Top.
Taylor Swift & Stevie Nicks
Taylor Swift got to perform with one of her favorite Idols, Stevie Nicks from the band Fleetwood Mac. Taylor & Stevie were both pitchy in some parts of the performance. Taylor was either singing or talking in her songs. I wished that Kanye West would have waltzed in during the performance and then he embarassed Taylor and got the show to a stand still.
Michael Jackson Tribute
The 3-D tribute to the "King of Pop" was incredible even though I didn't get my 3-D Glasses. Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and Smokey Robinson sang a Michael Jackson song that no one has never heard before. They nailed the song...the audience was wearing the 3-D glasses. Michael kids, daughter Paris & son Prince accepted the tribute Grammy on behalf of their late father. The audience gave a standing ovation to the Jackson family. Paris and Prince look grown up and did not cry during their speech.
Bon Jovi
The fans voted on which song the band should play at the Grammys. The song "Living on a Prayer" rocked the house. They got help from Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles. The performance was awesome.
David Foster, Mary J. Blige & Andrea Bocelli
They performed the song "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" to help benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti. The performance was emotional. Wyclef Jean, who is from Haiti, introduced the performance. I can't speak one word of Haitian but my prayers and thoughts to the families and victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti last month.
Maxwell & Roberta Flack
The performance was like waiting for paint to dry.
Les Paul Tribute
The tribute performance was awesome. Jeff Beck's guitar work couldn't match the amazing guitar skills of the late Les Paul. Les may be gone but his music and best selling guitars will live on forever.
Travis Barker, Drake, Eminem and Lil Wayne
The performance was good but they kept bleeping the lyrics. Was there an audio problem or CBS bleeping the profane lyrics in the song?
That's it for this year's Grammys. Don't forget tomorrow is Groundhog Day. Will there be 6 more weeks of winter or the early arrival of spring.
