Remembering the Celebrities We Lost in 2009

As 2009 draws to a close and a new year arrives, I like to pay tribute to the celebrities we lost in 2009:

Walter Cronkite, anchor of the CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981. He was dubbed "The Most Trusted Man in America" He worked with CBS for over 50 years.
The historic news events during Cronkite's run on the CBS Evening News: The assasination of JFK in 1963, the Vietnam War, the Watergate Scandal in 1973. He did election coverage for the network.

Senator Ted Kennedy was a political lion. The Kennedy family had suffered losses of family members over the years. John F. Kennedy died in 1963, John F. Kennedy, Jr. in 1999, Jackie Onassis in 1994, and Eunice Kennedy in 2009.

Patrick Swayze made women swoon when he starred in the 1987 movie, "Dirty Dancing". He also starred in movie hits "Ghost", "Red Dawn" and "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar".

The music world was shocked to hear the passing of "the King of Pop"-Michael Jackson. MJ changed the face of music forever with million sellers--"Beat It", "Thriller", "Bad" and "Billie Jean". He started singing with his brothers in the early 1970s--the Jackson 5. He inspired millions of dancers with his famous moonwalk and other dances. Jackson's music videos were events and must see.

Les Paul, guitarist, inspired many guitarists. His guitar playing was unlike any other. Gibson makes the famous guitars named after him. He had recording hits with his then wife Mary Ford in the early 1950s.

John Hughes directed movie classics from the 1980s: "The Breakfast Club", "Pretty in Pink" and "Sixteen Candles". Those movies were popular with teens in the '80s.

Natasha Richardson, famed Broadway and movie actress, delighted audiences with her beauty, her personality and her singing.

Farrah Fawcett died on the same day as Michael Jackson. She made a name for herself when she starred in the 1970s television series, "Charlie's Angels". Her famous poster made teenage boys and men fall in love with her. In 1983, she starred in the classic television movie "The Burning Bed" where she played an abused wife and mother. In the final years of her life, she suffered from cancer. Fans and celebrity friends prayed for her recovery. She was married to actor Ryan O' Neal.

Ed McMahon was Johnny Carson's sidekick and announcer on the "Tonight Show" from 1962 to 1992. He hosted a talent show titled "Star Search" that introduced us to some of today's hottest stars, Brittney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Rosie O' Donnell, Brad Garrett, Dave Chappelle, Drew Carey, Martin Lawrence and many others.

David Carradine starred in the classic television series "Kung Fu". He also starred in Quentin Taratino's "Kill Bill" movies.

Bea Arthur made us laugh as Maude in the 1970s and Dorothy on the "Golden Girls" in the 1980s.

Last week, we were shocked to hear the passing of actress Brittany Murphy at the age of 32. She got her big break in the movie "Clueless". She played Eminem's girlfriend in the 2001 movie "8 Mile". She was the voice of Luann on the animated TV show "King of the Hill"

These talented people will be sorely missed but their work will live on forever. We will always remember them whenever we watched them on TV or listened to their songs on the radio. Let's hope 2010 will have fewer celebrity deaths.

Have a safe and happy new year!!!

R.I.P. BRITTANY MURPHY 1977-2009

Today, the entertainment world has lost a wonderful young actress. Brittany Murphy passed away this morning at the age of 32. She starred in many movies and television shows. Her film credits include: "Clueless", "8 Mile", and "Little Black Book". Television viewers may know her as the voice of Luanne on "King of the Hill". My condolences are with her family. Her fans are very shocked after learning the news of her untimely death. It's so close to Christmas and the news of another celebrity death just broke out. We will miss you...Brittany Murphy

Golden Globes & Tiger Woods

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

Christmas is one week away...yay!!

I have an opinion and a complaint about the whole Tiger Woods sex scandal. In case, you haven't heard, Tiger has given up golf for a while to get his life back together after all his marital problems with his wife over other women. Reports claiming that Tiger Woods is a sex addict is way out whack. Who would want to picture Tiger Woods a sex machine...come on!. This is the world's greatest golfer, people. Every news channel I've been watching seems to be focused on Tiger Woods and all his alleged mistresses. The last count is...14. I wish the media would leave Tiger alone and give him his privacy. When Tiger feels ready to talk about his situation, he will talk but in the meantime, Tiger needs some privacy and I wish the media would respect his family's privacy. I hope that the Tiger Woods situation gets a happy ending so Tiger can come back to the golf course and everyone can watch him. Golf without Tiger Woods would be more boring than Christmas without snow. Please let Tiger concentrate on getting his life back on track.

Thanksgiving. Tiger, White House Party Crashers and Grammy

Hey everyone, how was your Thanksgiving weekend? Mine was good and fun...the day after Thanksgiving I went shopping. Who would be crazy enough to get up at 4am and hunt for some good bargains? I found a coat, jogging pants, jogging top, some socks and a pair of pants. It was good.

Now...My thoughts on the Tiger Woods scandal.
When I first heard that Tiger Woods was involved in a car accident last Friday, I thought "Oh please not again...a celebrity has passed away." He had a slight injury when his wife busted his car window with a golf club to bail him out of the car. Woods got a citation from the Florida State Police for drunk driving so he has to pay for that trouble. The last few days there have been reports that Tiger had been cheating on his wife with other women. Of course, I know that those allegations are not true. Let's hope that Tiger won't get in trouble with his wife because that will be a devastating blow to his billion dollar empire. The scandal has not put his endorsement deals in jeopardy which may be a good thing. The last athlete who was involved in a sex scandal--Kobe Bryant--lost many of his endorsement deals. Now, he is a changed man--his team, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship in 2009. I hope things will get better for Tiger so he can get back on the golf course and wow us with his golf playing.

I've been shocked by the news of a couple who want their own reality show crashing a dinner party at the White House. They were not on the invite list and sneaked past security. The Secret Service should have handled the situation and turned them away. The couple got in anyway and hobnobbed with the President. The couple should be arrested and charged with trespassing and locked away in jail to teach them the error of their ways. The couple's dreams of getting their own reality show should be shattered to smithereens.

Earlier tonight, the Grammy Awards nominations were announced.

Closing Performance:

Adam Lambert’s performance got ABC in hot water after receiving more than a thousand complaints. The American Idol runner up performed a song from his debut album that is out now in stores. Not everyone was impressed by Lambert’s shocking performance. He kissed a man on live television, grabbed his crotch, and did something disgusting that was in poor taste. Mr. Lambert’s shocking behavior may hurt his career and ruined his chances of winning a Grammy. ABC did the right thing by canceling Lambert’s performance on Good Morning America. If he did something like that when he was on Idol, he would have been voted off. It is a good thing that he lost. I will not be buying Mr. Lambert’s album or listen to any of his songs. Let’s hope that in the new season of Idol someone can just act a star and not like a reject from “Twilight”.

Ten Reasons "Gossip Girl" Should Be Cancelled

1. The female lead characters Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodsen are very negatively influence young girls

2. Excessive sex scenes

3. Jenny Humphrey is showing too much cleavage

4. Promoting teen sexuality

5. Characters shown drinking, partying and doing drugs excessively

6. Encouragement of bullying among school girls

7. The CW promoting the show way too many times and ignoring "Smallville"

8. Parents' warnings of their kids not watching the show ignored

9. The threesome episode is the final straw

10. Chuck Bass is not a good role model for teenage boys

Sex Scandals

There are sex scandals recently involving late night talk show David Letterman and ESPN baseball analyst Steve Phillips. Their stories are different.

Someone extorted $2 million out of David Letterman for his affairs with female staff members. Letterman took it in stride. He talked about his situation on his show and his ratings suddenly shoot up. The extortionist was arrested and accused of extorting famous people. Letterman convinced his audience that he was not having sex with female staff members. Somehow, I think Letterman is in hot water with his wife when she finds out about this. For our sake, I wish Letterman would stop talking about his personal business in front of America. Hopefully, this scandal will be far from over. More female staff members, past and present, may come up with claims that Letterman sexually harassed them.

Another scandal involved Steve Phillips, an analyst for ESPN who is married and his mistress, 22 years old and a production assistant. Luckily, there is a positive result: Phillips and the production assistant lost their jobs. The young lady threatened his wife.

Should David Letterman be fired from his late night show?

Do you think ESPN did the right thing of firing Phillips and his mistress?

Leave me some comments.

Happy Halloween!!!

Balloon Boy Hoax

Recently, a family in Colorado made a fool out of the entire nation by claiming that their 6-year-old son was kidnapped and flew away in a balloon. At first, I thought it was real and I was glued to the television when news broke out of a missing child. I realized that the whole thing was a hoax. I was not laughing and neither the entire nation. The family was using the kidnapping to get attention. They want their own reality show. Has this world gone crazy? We had enough reality shows involving children. It’s time to put an end to this type of reality television. First, the Gosselins then the Kardashians and now the Heenies. This madness must stop.

The Heenie Family must apologize to the nation for causing all this trouble and trying to scare away viewers who watch scripted television. The kids have been coaxed by their parents to be part of this scheme. I am happy to hear that the parents will end up behind bars and the kids will be in custody of the grandparents.

I urge you to stop watching reality shows that involve children because it gives anyone ideas. This hoax will be the most talked about story of the year.

What do you think?

Should the parents go to jail for faking a kidnapping?

Emmy Awards 2009

The 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were broadcast live on CBS at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Neil Patrick Harris, star of “How I Met Your Mother” which is on CBS hosted the awards show and he did it with class, flair, and ease. He was a fun host. He opened the show with a musical number titled “Put Down the Remote” and I learned that he doesn’t watch the news. Yeah, I agree even in hard economic times that you don’t want to watch the news for some negative news.

The awards are divided into genres to make it easy for the viewers to keep track of who won. I hoped that “Family Guy” wouldn’t have a prayer of winning an Emmy for Best Comedy Series. Why in the world would the television academy honor a show that is distasteful, uncomfortable, unfunny and annoying? “Family Guy” needs to be cancelled and never show up on the airwaves again.

Last Thursday, the Primetime Emmy nominations were announced.

The Shows In the Emmy Race:
30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Mad Men, Family Guy, American Dad, Flight of the Conchords, and House

The Shows ignored for major categories by Emmy:

HBO garnered 99 Emmy nominations; NBC was second with 67 and ABC was third with 55

My Emmy Predictions: Best Reality Competition: American Idol

Best Reality Host: Tom Bergeron, "Dancing with the Stars"

Best Reality Program: "Mythbusters"

Best Comedy Series: "Flight of the Conchords"--don't know why Family Guy gets an Emmy nod for Best Comedy Series--that show is the lowest form of crap ever broadcast on television today. What do people see in that show? It's bad, unfunny, distasteful, and not a good cartoon for kids. Whatever happened to Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear and those characters--now that's cartoon funny business

Best Drama Series: "House" and Hugh Laurie should win an Emmy for Best Actor-Drama

Best Actor-Comedy: Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory"--even nerds should win an Emmy

Best Actress-Drama: Elizabeth Moss, "Mad Men"

Best Variety Show: "Late Show with David Letterman"--Dave is beating Conan in the late night rating war so far this summer

Outstanding Children's Program: "iCarly"--Hannah Montana, you're going down!!

A Somber Week in Entertainment

This week, the entertainment world has mourned three famous faces. Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

Ed McMahon, long time sidekick and announcer of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show passed away on Tuesday. He hosted "Star Search" which discovered big name stars like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Cristina Aguliera, Rosie O' Donnell, Martin Lawrence and many others. He even promised us a check of $10 million..but i never had received my check..lol. He was lovable, fun to watch, and even got some laughs on the Tonight Show

Farrah Fawcett, iconic 1970s star of the hit television show "Charlie's Angels", was the It Girl of the 1970s. What teenage boy had a poster of Farrah in their bedroom back in the day. She lit up television screens as one of the Charlie's Angels. She was on the show for one season. "Charlie's Angels" became a hit in its first season large in part to Farrah. Women loved her hairstyle. Men wanted to date her. Prior to Charlie's Angels, Farrah was on "The Dating Game", an episode of "The Partridge Family" and dozens of TV commercials. In the 1980s, she starred in a TV movie titled "The Burning Bed" as an abused wife. That movie may have inspired Chris Brown to be mean to Rihanna. In later years, she did a reality show "Chasing Farrah". The news of her cancer battle inspired lots of people and gave hope about survival. We predicted at first that she will beat cancer but the cancer got her. Now, an angel is in heaven.

Hours after the news of Farrah's death broke out, another shocking celebrity death was announced. Michael Jackson, "King of Pop", has died. He was 50 years old. MJ leaves a lasting legacy that generations of fans will never forget for years to come. He started singing at the tender age of 10 when he performed with his brothers. The Jackson Five ruled the pop charts in the early 1970s with 16 top 40 hits like "ABC", "I Want You Back", "Never Can Say Goodbye", and "I'll Be There". As a solo artist, he had at least 20 Top 40 hits. His 1979 album "Off The Wall" gave us the classic "Rock with You". In the 1980s, his "Thriller" dominated the charts. The iconic album sold over 100 million copies. The songs in that album included "Beat It", "Billie Jean", "PYT (Pretty Young Thing)" and the title track "Thriller". His music videos put MTV on the map...they became must see TV!. Michael introduced his famous moonwalk on "Motown 25" TV special back in 1983. Everybody and his cousin wanted to do the moonwalk. In 1987, Jackson released his second hit album "Bad". It sold really well over 80 million copies. The video for the title track was directed by John Landis. In the 1990s, Michael's music and popularity declined. His personal life was creepy, weird, and off base. He befriended a chimpanzee named Bubbles. He owned a ranch called NeverLand. He molested boys younger than 16. He got in trouble with the law and tried to defend himself. His fans stood by him during those rocky times. In 2003, he got arrested and was later acquitted. In 2004, he was on trial for molesting kids. When he was acquitted, he jumped on top of a SUV and danced around...his fans went crazy but others were not pleased. He married Lisa Marie Presley for 2 years...what a crazy marriage that was!! Elvis was rolling in his grave when he found about that. He had 3 kids and dangled a baby off a balcony back in 2003...that scared a lot of people. Jacko was about to perform a series of concerts in London next month and tickets for those shows were sold out in 4 months. His fans were shocked to hear about the news of his death. His health had been declining and his look changed to cute to unattractive thanks to plastic surgery. Many dancers are influenced by Michael's moves and everybody wants to dance like Michael. There will never be another icon like Michael Jackson. He now joins Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, and Frank Sinatra in music heaven.

Now, three entertainment figures are in heaven enjoying life while fans all around the world grieve and remember the wonderful gifts they shared with the world. We will never forget you.

Hey, that's it for now...I'll be back soon with another exciting blog entry. I promise no Jon & Kate stories, No Speidi stories and fun cool entertainment news.

I am keeping cool from the dreaded heat wave going on for days in Memphis. Hope you're keeping cool. Laters

American Idol Season 8-Top 11

This week, the top 11 finalists take on country music by saluting the Grand Ole Opry with help and advice on song selection from Randy Travis. How well did they handle country music? Let's review the performances

Michael Sarver-"Ain't Going Down Til The Sun Comes Up"-Garth Brooks
The song has a lot of words; cool song choice; Randy didn't like it; Simon called it clumsy & awkward; bottom 3/on the bubble

Allison Iraheta-"Blame It on the Heart"-Patty Loveless
Could sing the alphabet; made the song her own; rock solid performance; Randy called it "dopely precocious"-She's safe for the top 10

Kris Allen-Garth Brooks song that escapes me at the moment
He sang without his guitar; honest, pure and vulnerable; good song choice; terrific; he has a shot of making it into the top 5; Safe

Lil Rounds-"Independence Day"-Martina MacBride
Lil Rounds singing country? She struggled through the song; stood her ground; Simon was disappointed; Safe-Lil is here to stay!!!

Adam Lambert-"Ring of Fire"-Johnny Cash
What was he thinking?!; Horrible; Confused the judges; "Nine Inch Nails Doing Country"; Johnny Cash was rolling over in his grave after listening to that; Adam, it's time to go home!!!

Scott McIntyre-"Wild Angels"-Martin MacBride
Played the piano again; Scott needs to mix it up; bad song choice; too safe; Scott needs to take risks and up his game or else he is gone

Alexis Grace-"Jolene"-Dolly Parton
Pitch problems; good song choice; flat; vulnerable; copycat; forgettable; What happened to Alexis who sang soul music?; Bottom 3

Danny Gokey-"Jesus Takes the Wheel"-Carrie Underwood
Good performance; brilliant; dressed like he was going on a polar expedition..even though it was 80 degrees..Dude, spring is here...the weather is warm; Despite his pitch problems, he is safe for another week

Anoop Desai-"You're Always on My Mind"-Willie Nelson
Big improvement from last week; perfect song choice; went from zero to hero; Nupe Dogg is hanging around next week

Matt Giraud-"So Small"-Carrie Underwood
Played the piano; amazing; authentic; he outsang Danny; compared to Michael Buble; A new frontrunner; best performance of the night; he is staying

Megan Joy-"Walkin' After Midnight"-Patsy Cline
Randy was impressed; perfect song choice; performed despite the flu; courageous; hope she feels better for next week

My Bottom 3 Picks: Scott MacIntyre, Alexis Grace, Adam Lambert
Person Going Home This Week: Scott McIntyre
